Bali, is a well-known tourist destination for everything from outdoor adventures to romantic, relaxing beach stays. Many modes of transport can help you get around the island, including bicycles, rental cars, taxis and public transport. Some hotels offer a selection of half-day or full-day tours that include transportation so you don't have to worry about it. Deciding how you want to get around Bali depends on where you want to go, the weather and your budget.

STEP 1
Walking is an ideal way to experience parts of Bali if your destination isn't too far away. In warm weather, bring sunscreen and bottled water to keep hydrated. Stay alert while walking, though, as the paths in some areas of Bali often have potholes or cracks. Bicycles are also an option. In places with heavy traffic such as Kuta and Legian, however, walking or biking may not be the best choice. Limit self-transportation to more rural areas.

STEP 2
Jump on Bali's public transport system, which will take you anywhere you want to go. Buses are more expensive, but some are air-conditioned. All you have to do is wait by the road and flag one down with your hand. To get off the buses, yell "Stop" and get up out of your seat. The downside to this method is that the vehicles move slowly because Bali roads can be quite heavily congested, so have patience and a flexible time schedule.

STEP 3
Choose a metered taxi if you prefer more space. Drivers of these taxis compete for business and will constantly stop and ask if you need a taxi. Don't be shy about negotiating rates, and insist the driver use the vehicle's meter.

STEP 4
Rent a car or motorbike if you are confident about your skills and your sense of direction in Bali. This is a good choice for long vacations or stays. You will need to show your home country license and an international license to rent a car, or a special permit obtained from police stations to rent a motorbike. Understand that driving in Bali means looking out for other drivers. Drivers will often swerve into your lane to avoid obstructions, and many don't pay attention to traffic signs such as red lights. Driving at night is not recommended. If going around a mountain curve, signal your approach with a toot of your horn; driving in the middle of the road is common in these areas.

STEP 5
Get around by air if you want to spend the money. Air Bali provides helicopters and seaplanes (as well as boats) for transportation and joy rides.
